Wood Element Personality

Talented & Tired

In the Five Phases of Chinese medicine, also called the Five Elements, the Wood personality is the trailblazer: talented, driven and always working the mind harder than the body can keep up with. The Huangdi Neijing links Wood to the Liver and Gallbladder, to spring and to anger, and says Wood people handle spring and summer well and struggle in autumn and winter.

Wood personality traits in the Huangdi Neijing

有才,勞心,少力,多憂,勞於事。能春夏不能秋冬。

Talented. Works the mind hard. Little stamina. Worries a lot. Toils away at their affairs. Handles spring and summer, not autumn and winter.

Huangdi Neijing, Lingshu ch. 64, “Twenty-Five Types of Yin-Yang People.” Translation by The Way of Five.

The Lingshu sorts people into five body types, one per phase, by build, complexion and temperament. It is a 2,000-year-old description, offered here as history and for fun, not as a prediction.

Wood strengths and blind spots

Good at

  • You see what needs doing and you start before anyone asks.
  • Plans, projects, ambition. You like a direction and you like moving.
  • People rely on you because you actually follow through.

Trips you up

  • You keep working long after your body has asked you to stop.
  • Your mind runs ahead and drags worry along with it.

Wood in the body: organs, season and emotion

Classical Chinese medicine ties each phase to an organ system, a season, an emotion and more. Traditional theory, not a diagnosis.

In Chinese medicine, Wood rules the Liver and Gallbladder, the system that keeps everything moving.

When Wood runs low

Patience runs out before the to-do list does, and every slow line starts to feel personal.

Everyday practices

  • Move your body every day, even a short walk.
  • Give worries a set time slot instead of all day.
  • Protect your wind-down time at night.

How Wood fits with the other elements

Wood feeds and is fed

  • Water feeds Wood: water is what makes trees grow.
  • Wood feeds Fire: wood is what fire burns.

Wood checks and is checked

  • Metal keeps Wood in check: the axe cuts the tree.
  • Wood keeps Earth in check: roots break up the soil.
