Metal Element Personality

Quietly Ruthless

In the Five Phases of Chinese medicine, also called the Five Elements, the Metal personality is the perfectionist: principled, quiet, exacting and fierce when it counts. The Huangdi Neijing links Metal to the Lung and Large Intestine, to autumn and to grief, and says Metal people handle autumn and winter well and struggle in spring and summer.

Metal personality traits in the Huangdi Neijing

身清廉,急心,靜悍,善為吏。能秋冬不能春夏。

Incorruptible. Impatient at heart. Quiet but fierce. Excellent at being an official. Handles autumn and winter, not spring and summer.

Huangdi Neijing, Lingshu ch. 64, “Twenty-Five Types of Yin-Yang People.” Translation by The Way of Five.

The Lingshu sorts people into five body types, one per phase, by build, complexion and temperament. It is a 2,000-year-old description, offered here as history and for fun, not as a prediction.

Metal strengths and blind spots

Good at

  • Standards. Yours are high and you meet them.
  • You say less than everyone else and mean all of it.
  • Rules, systems, order. You make chaos make sense.

Trips you up

  • Letting go: of grudges, of control, of the version you planned.
  • People read your quiet as cold. It usually isn't.

Metal in the body: organs, season and emotion

Classical Chinese medicine ties each phase to an organ system, a season, an emotion and more. Traditional theory, not a diagnosis.

In Chinese medicine, Metal rules the Lung and Large Intestine: breath, boundaries and letting go.

When Metal runs low

The bar goes up and the door closes. Fewer people get in, and old losses get replayed.

Everyday practices

  • A few minutes of slow breathing a day.
  • Clear out one thing: a drawer, an inbox, a grudge.
  • Get outside for fresh air.

How Metal fits with the other elements

Metal feeds and is fed

  • Earth feeds Metal: metals form inside the earth.
  • Metal feeds Water: cool metal gathers water, like dew.

Metal checks and is checked

  • Fire keeps Metal in check: fire melts metal.
  • Metal keeps Wood in check: the axe cuts the tree.

Questions about the Metal phase

What is the Metal element personality?

The perfectionist. The Huangdi Neijing (Lingshu ch. 64) sums up the Metal type as: "Incorruptible. Quiet but fierce. Excellent at being an official." In modern life: you say less than everyone else and mean all of it.

What organs does Metal govern in Chinese medicine?

In traditional Chinese medicine, Metal is linked to the Lung and Large Intestine. Its sense organ is the nose and its tissue is the skin and body hair.

What season is Metal?

Autumn, the season of dryness (Huangdi Neijing, Suwen).

What emotion is linked to Metal?
