Water Element Personality

The Fearless Liar

In the Five Phases of Chinese medicine, also called the Five Elements, the Water personality is the strategist: fearless, deep and hard to read. The Huangdi Neijing links Water to the Kidney and Bladder, to winter and to fear, and says Water people handle autumn and winter well and struggle in spring and summer.

Water personality traits in the Huangdi Neijing

不敬畏,善欺紿人……能秋冬不能春夏。

Respects no one. Fears nothing. Skilled at deceiving people. Handles autumn and winter, not spring and summer.

Huangdi Neijing, Lingshu ch. 64, “Twenty-Five Types of Yin-Yang People.” Translation by The Way of Five.

The Lingshu sorts people into five body types, one per phase, by build, complexion and temperament. It is a 2,000-year-old description, offered here as history and for fun, not as a prediction.

Water strengths and blind spots

Good at

  • You aren't scared of much, and it shows.
  • You think deeper and further than people expect.
  • You can read people and handle them. The Neijing calls this deception. We'd call it strategy.

Trips you up

  • Rules and authority annoy you, even the useful ones.
  • You run on reserves you don't refill until they're empty.

Water in the body: organs, season and emotion

Classical Chinese medicine ties each phase to an organ system, a season, an emotion and more. Traditional theory, not a diagnosis.

In Chinese medicine, Water rules the Kidney and Bladder, your deep reserve: what you were born with and what you spend.

When Water runs low

The fearless one starts hedging. Plans stay secret, risks get skipped, and nobody's allowed to help.

Everyday practices

  • Sleep like it's your job.
  • Keep warm, especially your lower back and feet.
  • Plan rest before you need it.

How Water fits with the other elements

Water feeds and is fed

  • Metal feeds Water: cool metal gathers water, like dew.
  • Water feeds Wood: water is what makes trees grow.

Water checks and is checked

  • Earth keeps Water in check: banks and dams hold water.
  • Water keeps Fire in check: water puts out fire.
